Local SEO for a Sarasota business comes down to four things: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, a steady flow of genuine reviews, consistent listings on the sites Sarasota customers use, and a website that clearly explains what you do and where you do it. This checklist walks through each step in the order we’d tackle it.
Google says it ranks local results on relevance, distance and popularity. You can’t change how far a customer is from you, so every step below works on the other two: making it clear what you offer, and building the reviews, links and listings that show people trust you.
Your Google Business Profile
1. Claim and verify your profile
Search for your business on Google Maps and claim it, or create a new profile at business.google.com. Google picks the verification method, which can be a video, a live call, a phone or text code, email or a postcard. Postcard codes arrive within 14 days.
To qualify, you need a location customers visit or a service you provide at their location. A virtual office or a PO box doesn’t count, according to Google’s guidelines.
2. Use your real business name
Your profile name must match your sign. Adding keywords such as “Best Roofer Sarasota” breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
3. Set your address or service area correctly
If customers come to you, show your address. If you go to them, as a plumber, pool service or mobile groomer does, hide the address and set a service area. You can list up to 20 cities or ZIP codes, such as Sarasota, Venice, North Port, Osprey, Nokomis and Lakewood Ranch, as long as they’re within about two hours of your base.
4. Choose the most specific primary category
Categories affect where you appear. Pick the most specific primary category that fits, such as “Pool cleaning service” rather than “Contractor,” and add secondary categories only for things you really do.
5. Keep your hours right through the seasons and storms
Seasonal businesses can list their current seasonal hours as regular hours and mark the profile temporarily closed in the off-season. For closures of up to six days, such as holidays, use special hours. For seven days or more, Google recommends marking the business temporarily closed.
Plan for hurricane season too. It runs from June 1 to November 30, and Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key on October 9, 2024. Updating your hours before and after a storm keeps customers from driving to a closed door.
6. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Upload photos of your storefront, team, work and vehicles. Google accepts JPG or PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels recommended, and videos up to 30 seconds long. New photos can take a day or two to appear.
7. Post updates, offers and events
Business Profile posts come in three types: updates, offers and events. Posts older than six months are archived unless they have a date range, so a monthly rhythm keeps your profile looking current.
Reviews
8. Ask every customer for a review
Google encourages businesses to ask for reviews, but asking only happy customers, offering discounts for reviews or posting reviews for yourself all break its review policy. The penalties include blocked reviews and a public warning on your profile. Since October 2024, the FTC’s fake reviews rule has also let the FTC fine businesses for fake reviews.
The simplest compliant routine is to send every customer the same short link after every job.
9. Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews and answer critical ones calmly, with a way to get in touch. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews.
Listings and citations
10. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, your Google profile and every directory. Old addresses and tracking numbers left on directories confuse customers and search engines alike.
11. Get listed where Sarasota customers look
Beyond Google, these listings matter for a Sarasota business:
- Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect) for Apple Maps and Siri.
- Bing Places for Business, which can import your Google profile.
- The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce member directory.
- Visit Sarasota County partner listings, if you serve visitors.
- The Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, if you serve Lakewood Ranch.
- BBB of West Florida, which covers Sarasota and Manatee counties.
- The directories that rank on page one for your own service, such as Yelp, Angi or industry associations.
Local organizations such as the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County and SCORE Manasota are worth knowing for the events and introductions they offer, which can lead to genuine local mentions and links.
Your website
12. Give each main service its own page
One page per service, written around what customers ask before they call, helps Google match you to more searches. Include prices or price ranges if you can, photos of real work and clear calls to action.
13. Describe your real service area once, clearly
Say where you work and where you don’t. Mention the places you really serve, such as downtown, St. Armands, Siesta Key, Gulf Gate or Lakewood Ranch, where it helps a customer decide. Don’t create a near-copy of the same page for every town: Google treats those as doorway pages.
14. Add local business structured data
LocalBusiness structured data tells search engines your name, address, phone, hours and service area in a format they read directly. Keep it identical to your Google profile.
15. Plan content around Sarasota’s seasons
Sarasota’s busy season is real. In Visit Sarasota County’s 2025 fiscal year, hotel occupancy averaged 78.9% from January to March and 49.2% from July to September. Most paid-stay visitors came from the Midwest (28%) and the Northeast (26%). Publish seasonal pages and offers a few weeks before demand rises, and use the summer to fix your site and build reviews.
AI answers and measurement
16. Get ready for AI answers
Google’s AI features now answer many local questions directly, and in March 2026 Google added Ask Maps, which draws on place details and reviews. Google says there are no special requirements for its AI features and recommends keeping your Business Profile up to date. In practice, that means complete profile details, clear service pages and recent reviews that mention what you did. Our AI search optimization service covers this in depth.
17. Track the calls and forms that come from search
Watch the calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Business Profile’s performance report, and connect Google Search Console to your website. Count real leads, not just rankings, and check them monthly.
